After nine years of teaching, I decided to step away from being a Secondary Visual Arts & Ceramics teacher to focus on my mental health and be more present for my growing family. I left my professional teaching career with two Master’s Degrees: one in the Art of Teaching and the second in Art Education. Though I am no longer teaching in a formal classroom, teaching is the core of my art practice. It’s through my experiences and observations in a classroom that I can demystify ‘ceramic art’ and reveal to individuals that they are capable of creating. The atmosphere of an art room or art studio provides a comforting opportunity to be vulnerable and learn from failure.
I was first introduced to ceramics at George Fox University. Due to my photographer background, I have a desire for simplicity and subtle textures. This is the driving inspiration for my ceramic practice and current body of work. My functional ceramic pieces elevate function with subtle warmth and familiarity.
My current work discusses the relationship between raw clay and familiar landscapes. As a production potter, the majority of my work is wheel thrown. However, since taking a creative break to welcome my youngest child into the world, sculpting has entered into my ceramic practice. Floral designs and fashion have recently inspired a new body of work. Imagery from iconic animated movies and video games are my current muse.
